Cryolite is mainly used as flux for aluminum electrolysis; it is also used as wear-resistant additive for grinding products, which can effectively improve the wear resistance and cutting force of grinding wheel, prolong the service life and storage time of grinding wheel; it is also used as flux for ferroalloy and rimmed steel, non-ferrous metal flux, casting deoxidizer, chain olefin polymerization catalyst, as well as emulsifier for glass antireflection coating, enamel and glass emulsion white flux, flux of welding material, filler of ceramic industry, pesticide, insecticide and other industries.

Cryolite (Na3AlF6, sodium hexafluoroaluminate) is an uncommon mineral.Cryolite occurs as glassy, colorless, white-reddish to gray-black prismaticmonoclinic crystals. It has a Mohs hardness of 2.5 to 3 and a specific gravity of about 2.95 to 3.0. It is translucent to transparent with a verylow refractive index of about 1.34, which is very close to that of water;thus if immersed in water, cryolite becomes essentially invisible.
