It can be found in nature as oskarssonite and rosenbergite. It can also be manufactured. The vast majority of aluminum fluoride is produced by heating hydrogen fluoride with alumina or aluminum oxide to 700 °C.

Aluminum fluoride is commonly used in ceramics, where it is found as the main chemical compound in glazes for finished products. It is also included to create refractory ceramic products. And in another instance of seemingly surprising uses for a chemical such as aluminum fluoride, it is widely used in beer and wine making industries, where it has the ability to inhibit the fermentation process.

 

Preparation Method

The hydrofluoric acid reacts with aluminum hydroxide at a high temperature to obtain aluminum fluoride trihydrate, which is then calcined and dehydrated to obtain anhydrous aluminum fluoride. Alternatively, each aluminum fluoride may be prepared from fluorite, sulfuric acid, and aluminum hydroxide.
