Aluminium fluoride is an inorganic substance with the chemical formula AlF3 prepared by the reaction of aluminium hydroxide or aluminium metal with hydrogen fluoride,or by the action of aluminium trichloride with hydrofluoric acid and ammonia.Colourless or white crystals.Insoluble in water and insoluble in acids and bases.Stable in nature,hydrolysable under heating.Used as an electrolyte conditioner and catalyst in the electrolysis of aluminium.

Application
1. Alumium fluoride is primarily used as an additive in the manufacturing of aluminum and in electrolysis.
2. Some intriguing discoveries have revealed that aluminum fluoride has a wide range of applications in a number of sectors and activities. It is, for example, a key component in the manufacture of fluoroaluminate glass.
3. Fluoroaluminate glass is used in a variety of optical fiber applications, including medical and fiber-optic imaging.
4. Aluminum fluoride is widely used in ceramics, where it is the primary chemical constituent for final goods.
The hydrofluoric acid reacts with aluminum hydroxide at a high temperature to obtain aluminum fluoride trihydrate, which is then calcined and dehydrated to obtain anhydrous aluminum fluoride. Alternatively, each aluminum fluoride may be prepared from fluorite, sulfuric acid, and aluminum hydroxide.
