Physical Properties
1. At 1238 °C, its vapor pressure is 1 mm.
2. As compared to trialkylaluminiums, the chemical is less vulnerable to oxidation.
3. In nature, aluminum fluoride is non-flammable.
4. When this chemical reaches the point of breakdown, it generates very hazardous hydrogen fluoride vapors.
5. Aluminum fluoride sublimates at a high temperature of 1272 °C and a pressure of 760 mmHg.
Applications
1.It is used to reduce the melting temperature of electrolyte and improve the conductivity in aluminum electrolysis industry;
2.It can be used as flux of non-ferrous metals;
3.It can be used as flux and glaze composition of ceramic glaze and enamel glaze;
4.It can be used as inhibitor of side fermentation in the production of essential oil;
5.It is used as an inhibitor of side fermentation in alcohol production;
6.Used as welding flux in metal welding;
7.For making optical lenses.
The hydrofluoric acid reacts with aluminum hydroxide at a high temperature to obtain aluminum fluoride trihydrate, which is then calcined and dehydrated to obtain anhydrous aluminum fluoride. Alternatively, each aluminum fluoride may be prepared from fluorite, sulfuric acid, and aluminum hydroxide.
Hydrogen fluoride hydrolysate is irritating, can cause eyes, respiratory tract mucosa irritation symptoms, severe cases can occur bronchitis, Pneumonia, and even produce reflex asphyxia. Store in a cool, ventilated warehouse. The packaging is sealed. Should be stored separately with acids, edible chemicals, avoid mixed storage.
